    Default sweetest thing

This past Saturday was the annual trout derby here in McKinney. There were so many children out there getting to fish, many I am sure for the first time as some of the parents surely had not fished before

Seeing them enjoying fishing was a grand thing indeed.

But the very best was not until the following morning. I drove by the lake just to reconnoiter, see if the banks were clear enough to let me cast. Sure enough they were but instead of me fishing this is what happened. I saw a young fellow with a fly rod working the water. I approached and greeted him hoping to strike up a conversation with a fellow fly angler. Turns out he had just bought his rig at Academy the day before and had never used it! I took him up as an ad hoc pupil and by the time I left he was pulling a fish in on every other cast. Pretty neat! I felt so good that I did not bother to fish myself.

Drove off feeling a little bit like the old Lone Ranger must have at the end of each episode "my work here is done and I must go"

    Robin;

Now that is what fishing is about. I would trade a great day fishing for a great day of teaching someone to fish in a second.
I also enjoy watching I watch the water and watch the angler. I think what would I do in this area. And watch the outcome of their choice. I really feel that a trip to the water has so many possibilies. I might not catch a fish but I never feel skunked.

Now sit down and figure if he teaches one or two and they teach one or two. You are doing your part to bring more people into our sport. And who knows you might just develope another fishing partner. What could be better than that.

Way to go Robin. Nothing like that kind of feeling is there. The only time I felt better than I did helping a beginner was when the beginner was my son.

    Hey Folks,

Yesterday, I spent a few minutes with
a new friend that had just gotten his first
ever fly rod from Cabelas and was anxious to
to drown some flies. We went out in the
yard for a bit to practice some casting. He
was having some obvious problems and was
perhaps concerned that this fly fishing stuff might be more difficult than expected.
I took a page from the Grand Pubah's "How
to Cast" article, and stuck out my arm for
a stop for his rod. The very next cast, and
virtually all of them from that point on,
stretched fully out to the end of the line
with no more piles of line laying in coils
on the ground. That ominus popping sound
was absent from the casting stroke as well.
We took turns casting for about a half hour,
watching each other and commenting on what
we saw. At the end of the half hour, my new
friend was hitting targets with good accuracy and wearing a big grin. Thanks
JC! When I first read your article I kinda
took it as a joke. It ain't. Success is a
hard animal to argue with. And yes, it is
fun watching someones face light up when a
point hits home and makes a difference.
    Warm regards, Jim

I try to get one new person into fly fishing every year. I use JC's "Arms as Stops method". But, after being beaten black and blue by a 10 year old last year (He caught his first Trout that day) I'm thinking of PVC pipe padded with waterpipe foam insulation.

    Hey Jack,

My student was a pretty big guy but I
collected nary a bruise. I suspect it had
more to do with concern for the shiney new
3 weight than it did my aging carcus how-
    ever.*G* Warm regards, Jim

I took a buddy of mine out fly fishing for his first time on sunday. what a new experience for me. i have never tried to put what i have learned into words, and i have never tried to "troubleshoot" someone else's casting in person. but i have to tell you, it was a major learning experience for me.

watching his mistakes as he learned the basics of casting, and trying to point out what he was doing wrong and offer corrective suggestions, helped me more in my own casting than i was aware was possible. just being sooo conscious of what he was doing wrong, helped me to be more consciouse of what i was doing wrong, or could be doing better. really a tremendously rewarding experience for both of us.
