Simple fix. Just buy one $20-$30 culm of bamboo and build a handful of rods from it instead of a $40 blank for just one rod.

    Simple, yah?

    Jeremy......(okay, run/duck thingy.) *G*

I'm wrong. I'm wrong. I'm wrong. Because of the generosity of some great guys and gals on FAOL I've been shown the flaws in my thinking. They have shown me how to put together a rod and components package or about $70. Rod building can be almost inexpensive. I just didn't know where to look. If I'm satisfied with the end product I'll be very, very happy.
    Thanks All,
    Bruce

Check out utmost enterprises. Batson's outlet. $16 will get you a blank, $4 for a grip, and some seats for $2. All you need is guides, and you are only in for $22.

MudHole is one of the most comprehensive rod building sites out there. http://www.mudhole.com/ But I usually start with Jann's. https://www.jannsnetcraft.com

Here's a parts list for a 5wt I just threw together off their site from Jann's. They have parts both cheaper and higher end.

    8'6" 5wt IM6 Graphite blank: $38.95
10 piece chrome guide set with stripper $9.65
    Chrome tip top: $1.09
Titanium anodized aluminum winding check: $2.09
    Hook keeper: $0.62
Reverse half wells cork fly rod grip: $8.29
Pacific Bay Rosewood fly reel seat : $9.59

    $71.18 plus shipping.

It's been a while since I built a rod, but I still have the paper work on the last one I built that I 'sold'.

    9' 3 wt. batson blank $48.
Skeleton Fuji seat $4 (okay, 3.98..I rounded up)
    Twenty cork rings @ .25 each $2.50
Reel seat insert turned from mesquite - Free (turned it from a piece of firewood)
Fuji SIC single foot guides, 10 @ 2.99 each $30.
Add in a few dollars for thread, finish, feathes for the inlays, etc. $5.

    Still under $100

    Sold it for $600 cash.

Had about twelve hour of labor in it.

    Buddy

p.s, prices above were 'wholesale' at the time I bought them.

    OK I will

    Blank (in-house) $660
    Reel Seat (in-house) $65)
    Cork 32 @ $2 $64
    Ferrules two sets (in-house) $250
    Guides $24

Total $1063 + the miscelaneous thread, glue, and finish.

    Rod will sell for $1200

All the items marked (in-house) are manufactured by me and the price listed is what I would have to have for them if I sold them at retail. For what it is worth, a rod like this is not available from Orvis, T&T, Winston, Etc. You might find one that is similar from custom bamboo rod makers.

Don't you just love this rod building. There is no end to where a person can go with it. A person can pick any range of cost you want and have fishing rods that perform well that are made well.

    Enjoy the rod building journey,

    fishbum
