I just got into flytying about 3 weeks ago . At first any trout that bit one of my flies would have to have been nuts and mostly blind . They were so ugly and poorly done . Now several hundred flies later they are not too bad . I'm even proud of some of them , a #22 Doc Spratly I tied for the fun of it , Looks kinda neat . As for cost ... hmmm with the purchase of the vice and all the other equipment , not to mention a whole lot of feathers and stuff I will never need cause I neglected to consult my local flyshop guy before I went nuts and bought anything pretty and flashy . So far they average about $5.00 each . That said , from now on each one now costs just about 15cents apiece to make and I have a skill that I can take to the lake and try to match the hatch . Plus it has cut my computer time to about an hour a day instead of 8 hours a day . That has pleased my wife so much that she ok'd the purchase of a better vise .
