Important populations have been designated as of special concern, while several others are listed as not at risk.

In New Brunswick, outer Bay of Fundy rivers including the Saint John River may be declared endangered, as will all the Nova Scotia rivers that face the open Atlantic. Rivers from the Margaree to the Miramchi and to the Restigouche, Grand Cascapedia and Bonaventure could have Special Concern status. Legendary Anticosti Island rivers may have Endangered Status, and the south coast rivers of Newfoundland like the Conne and Grey may get Threatened Status.
