Hilton Head Island in November

I am from Kansas, and do not know anything about the Carolinas. We will be there over Thanksgiving, the day before and day after. Cannot really afford a guide, but would like to fish. Do not know what to fish for, where, or with what. I am used to using a 4,5,or 6 wt rod, with a #14 hares ear or pheasant tail, so do not even know what flies to use.

Should I even bother packing a fly rod at this time of year?

In which "Plantation" will you be staying? I know Palmetto Dunes has a canal that is well known for outstanding fishing, but you have to be staying within Palmetto Dunes to fish there. Also, Sea Pines has a number of ponds that may be fished. Should be a great time of year for quality fishing.
As a caution, alligators will be seen during the day on shore near some lagoons, so be aware of that. We saw plenty of them one year we went in late October.

There are miles of canals and numerous water hazards on golf courses, frequently guards by gators. I feel sure you can rent a kayak or boat at several places. If you haven't go to Google Earth and explore the island. There is a small water retention pond in front of the old Cracker Barrel building has some nice red fish in it. November isn't a guarantee barefeet on the beach time of the year, the latitude there is only about 100 miles south of Atlanta if that.
