Default a new (for me) fly, and question re: FOTW

Ok, first of all, the FOTW question. What is the necessary criteria to submit a sly for FOTW? I was under the impression that it had to be an original pattern, but now I see that that's not necessarily true. So what are the key elements of an FOTW submission that makes it stand out?

Here is a recent fun tye from tutorials found on this site. Maybe some old forum posts?

A by-gone era model of the same general type was available over 50 years ago before foam was available. It was called a Qillby Minnow.
The design was based on the butt end of a turkey quill with the cut end plugged after being slipped over a long shank hook. Most were painted with a red head to look like a casting lure called a Bass-o-Reno that was in vogue at the time. Their advantage, they were unsinkable.

Ray - I do believe you are a walking library! Thank you for the interesting historical information!

    Albasurf,

The main criteria is that the fly works well for you in your home waters for the type of fish you target. If it's a fly originated by someone else, give credit where credit is due, if you know who originated the fly.

Start out with a list of materials used to tie the fly.

List the steps needed to tie the fly and take a photo to illustrate each step. Include any special tips or tricks that you have that make the fly easier to tie, more durable, etc.

Add in any special fishing instructions for the type of fish you target with the fly.

E-mail the whole thing to Ladyfisher for publication.

I think that about covers it.

I'm not any kind of library, Albasurf. I'm probably just old enough to be your grandfather. Sneaking up on 84.

Ray, you got me by 20 years, almost. Hit 64 October 3d. I found that sneaking up on a birthday never works, it happens at the same time whether I run at it or crawl. They do seem to arrive closer together now though.

    PS, sorry for the hijack.
