A by-gone era model of the same general type was available over 50 years ago before foam was available. It was called a Qillby Minnow.
The design was based on the butt end of a turkey quill with the cut end plugged after being slipped over a long shank hook. Most were painted with a red head to look like a casting lure called a Bass-o-Reno that was in vogue at the time. Their advantage, they were unsinkable.
