Thread: need a reel

    Default need a reel

I've ordered a Steffen 7'9" glass fly rod for a 3/4 wt line and need a reel to go with it... I think the rod weighs around 3 1/4 oz. but not sure (does anyone know?). If anyone is familiar with or has one of these rods please tell me what reel you suggest pairing it with. THANKS!

I think that 3" Pridex you have for sale would be perfect on that rod. Seriously!

Without knowing that you had a Pridex 3"er for sale, that would have been the one I'd recommend.
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.

Yeah, I was hoping so too, but the reel is too small to handle the 4wt -- it won't hold it! That's why I'm selling it.

While I admit some ignorance on the capacity of that reel, I really never met a 3" reel that wouldn't hold a 4wt.

It won't a hold a WF 4 or a DT? How much backing are you using or are you using any?

It's the backing capacity I bet.
Condex and Beaudex only hold about 20yds or so of 20lb backing

I guess it depends on what species of fish crisip plans to persue but I have more than a few trout reels spooled up with 20 yards or less of backing.

I'm with the rest of the guys. Put the line on first, then add enuf backing to protect the line. Take it all off, and reverse the process. Backing first, then the line. I'll bet you'll be amazed at the feel! If I ever got to the backing on some of my reels, I'd have a heart attack, and it wouldn't matter!!
Trouts don't live in ugly places.

Disregarding the Pridex, I would suggest a Hardy Featherweight.
