I highly recommend the Elk River for smallies. My father grew up in Anderson MO, so I grew up fishing the Elk, and still make it over there once or twice a year. The last time I fished it, this fly in olive was a killer http://www.warmwaterflytyer.com/corner.asp?page=9. If you get an over-cast or cloudy day, the action on top can be good on small poppers or foam hoppers in the slower stretches.
