Thread: beginners website

1. #1

Default beginners website

I took an adult ed class to learn more about web design for work and started this website:
http://www.flyfishingforbeginners.com[/url:9203f]

It was just supposed to be part of the class and now it's taken a life of its own. Class is over but can't seem to stop working on it (adding more sections, content, etc).

I'd like to folks opinions on the site. Layout ok, content? Any good old fashioned criticism is appreciated. Thumbs up are always nice too.

Thanks

Very nice look and feel. Site has potential to be very useful resource for beginning fly fishers..

In terms of suggestions, I noticed a broken link to the first photo on your Dry Flies page. Also, I would suggest not inserting the hyperlink to a page until you have placed something of interest on it.

Good luck with your new career.

Good for you - you've done a lot right.

Suggestions:

You should use a spell-check on each page before you put it online.

Check your facts, the smallest hook/fly size is 32 not 22.

Streamers do look like small fish or fry, but not "wounded" ones...although there are some tied 'crippled' on purpose.

Your description of the roll cast troubles me. You should re-think that one.

On the overhead cast, you probably should mention it is 'stopping' the rod which makes the line go. Otherwise the person is just 'waving' the rod forward and back.

Stick with it - there certainly is a place for it.

If you haven't found it, you might read through the Fly Fishing 101 section here on FAOL: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/101/[/url:bc051]

I agree with the others here, you're on the right track with the site. Very nice graphic content. Overall it's interesting, and uncluttered.

I started out using a fill-in-the-blanks format, I wanted more than one image on a page so I researched HTML coding and it snowballed from there. Web design is very addicting.

Great job, keep it up!

Thanks for all the great comments and recommendations. I still have alot of work to do; finish some sections and add photos especially to the fly section.

Hopefully, this site will some folks out who are getting started.

Thanks again.

Nice looking work!

A couple of ideas to ponder.

You are careful to mention that equipment doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. But LL Bean is the only non proprietary supplier you link to. Consider Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Dicks, Bob Marriott's and Sportsman's Warehouse as general equipment stores. And TFO, WW Grigg, and Okuma as low and mid priced rod suppliers.

Also, believe it or not, there is a wide audience in the south who want to give this a try but all they ever see in print is fishing for trout. You might encourage troutless beginners to consider fishing close to home for panfish, bass and crappie.

Very nice, lots of good information for the tyro. A couple of suggestions. A simple line drawing on the cating part. Both overhead and roll-cast. Possibly mention something about hand-me-down and or used equipment (We all know a lot of use started that way. I may have missed this, but did not notice it. Keep up the great job, may just end up the Ray Bergman of the website age. Jonezee
