Heading to Destin in a month

So after an absolutely disastrous trip to Cape San Blas last October (caught zero fish and broke the tip off my 8wt) I'm headed back this year to Destin and will be staying at Destin West Resort the first week of October. I have a new St. Croix Legend Ultra 8wt that I intend to initiate while I'm there.

I've had some luck there in the past fishing in the bay flats, and I'm wondering what the conditions are like in lieu of the oil spill fiasco? Has anything changed since?

Also, my wife has suggested that I get a charter. I'm cheap though, and I have a great kayak that I like to fish from, so I probably won't. If I was to hire one though, are there any recommendations on guides? I have zero interest in bait fishing or spinning tackle (of course), so I want fly only.

Considering you are from Iowa I would say good timing. Maybe Starfish can provide intel on the area for when you go. Of course, weather patterns will be different.
