The spinning loop method will add some magic to a fly. Done correctly the flies body will present a "Halo" effect when wet, and take on life itself. Just don't get things packed so tight when you wind the loop around the hook shank you blot out this important feature.
If you need to cut the material on either side of the loop before you spin it, instead of using your regular tying scissors, which have small blades, use a pair of four or six inch shears to dress the loop. You'll make one long snip, instead of chopping at it with your tying scizzors and life will be good.
To make these loops you don't need any special gadgets. A pair of english hackle pliers and the scissors is enough.
I learned from the books of Poul Jorgensen and you should go there. I saw Poul in action and his skill made me chuckle in amazement as I watched. It's easier than it looks.
