    Hugefish,
Hope you or one of your buddies gets one. Around these parts, they're found in most clean gravel or sandy bottom slow moving streams. While the one in the photo isn't a big one, he is a little above average in the streams I fish. I just like to catch them and take a look. I think they're among the prettiest fish out there and perhaps the prettiest fish in warm fresh water.

I am always pleased to catch a longear when out fishing- no matter the size. They are beautiful to look at.

Definitely! Those are BEAUTIFUL fish! I don't believe I have ever had the pleasure of catching one. Yet.

Jeff, They are definitely longear, but the last photo looks like a Green Sunfish, although many people mistakenly call them perch which are not members of the sunfish family.

I don't know why, but it annoys me when people call sunfish perch. It doesn't really matter, but for some reason it's irratating

Green, I'm right there with you. "Walleyed Pike" is another incorrect name I hear from time to time, although not nearly as often.

No question it's a longear. They average smaller than a bluegill or pumpkinseed with an average length of about 4 to 6 inches. They can be real scrappers on a 1 weight, which is what I do all of my pan fishing with the last several years. Sunfish frequently crossbreed, but you can be pretty certain it's a longear if it has that long ear flap with no red or orange in it. The IGFA World Record is 1lb. 12 oz. caught in New Mexico in 1985....I think.

Thanks guys. Yes, I do agree, they are longear and the fish in the bottom photo is a greenie.

Don't have a 1wt (yet) but have had a lot of fun over the past few years catching these guys on a 3wt. They all seem to think they're about 2X their actual size.
