BassAngler, Furled leaders aren't really tied, they are Furled. This is a twisting process used to create a tapered leader using a continuous of thread or mono. There are many posts here and elsewhere with details of the process. Kathy Scott also has also created a DVD which demonstrates the technique.

It's nice of you to say that Kathy, but as far as I'm concerned it's a classic case of the student surpassing the teacher.

Im thinking of making some myself. I found a like with a lot of info on making them with a 10/8/6 taper. My question is the uni-thread in orvis is only size 8/0. But the sizes in cabellas are 8/0, 6/0, and 3/0. What size should i use?

Use 6/0! The 8/0 is too light and thin and easily breaks when twisted.

Here are two links for 'how to' on furled leaders, including a god image of a finished one...
    http://www.uniproducts.com/english/fcs-prod.asp?no=27[/url:08b8a]

I made a few variations from the above for my own set up.....

    1. I used a 1X6 board and some 1" dia. dowels for my jig. By drilling a series of holes I can adjust the peg positions for making leaders in several lentghs.

    2. I tension the strands with rubber bands instead of weights. 3 or 4 thin rubber bands strung in series (end to end) apply the tension to each strand.

    3. I spin using a variable speed hand drill with a hook chucked in the jaws. A bent paper clip used as a hook on the rubber bands also act as a pointer to show when the strand has twisted enough.

I can get about 3 leaders from a spool of 6/0 UNI thread. I then add sections of mono leader tapered to the desired tippet size.

    So for a 9'-6x I would add 8 of 2X, then 8" of 4X and 18" of 6X.

Would the directions here work http://www.flyfisherman.com/skills/jcfurledleaders/[/url:106f8]

They seem to be slightly more easier to understand. And have a better diagram.

It's up to you on what size thread you use I use both for light lines I use 8 for 5 and over I use 6. It's totally up to the person who is making the leaders on what they want to use try differnt things and see what works best for you. As I said in another post about F leaders is there have been tons of people making them here in the past few years and who can sell you one pretty cheap if you ask or some as I have in the past have given them away just for people to try and then I've had more come back to buy from me but. Now I just mainly make them for me and my friend unless someone really wants them bad then I'd start making them again. I also make toothy critter leaders( muskie pike) if you want that Info e-mail me Later Matt if e-mailing put Furled leader in subject.
