Default Beginner Question, Book on Rod Mbking

    Hi all,

I am wanting to build my first fly rod, and actually have in mind building a few in the next few years. (Grand kids, and a couple or three for me.)

At any rate, what is a good book on building fly rods?

I am actually not in a desperate need for more fly rods, but recently broke one, don't have a 7wt, and wouldn't mind having a 4 pc 6 wt.................

Thanks in advance for the advise.

    Thanks and regards,

    Gandolf

Dale Clemens books for the beginner. Fly Rod Building Made Easy by Art Scheck as well. http://www.rodbuilding.org/list.php?2 Check out your local library. They may be able to get them from the rest of the State inventory. Same with local college libraries. No need to pay for them if you can get them from the library. If that doesn't work, let me know and you can borrow some of mine.

An excellent book is Tom Kirkman's book on rodbuilding. Covers all you need to know and has great detailed photos. He runs rodbuilding.org website and you can get it through the website or Amazon. It's also not very expensive-around $18 as I recall. Also, check out his website for answers to any questions you have on rodbuilding.

Fly Rod Building by Art Scheck -- covers about everything you need to know.

Also read the Al Campbell section on this web site -- very good and gives you about everything you need. The books provide more detail and instruction.

Third, post your questions here -- and you will get lots of really good information and help.

Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod by L.A. Garcia, put out by Frank Amato Publishing, has good information, clear instructions, and great pictures to help you out. It's also a great idea to find someone who is experienced in rod building to help you get started. That's how I build my first rod. I'm already planning the next 3 or 4 rods to add to the collection.

Gandolf, at the bottom of the home page, there is a link to "rod building." It is a 12 part series that the late Al Campbell did some years ago. It is a good instructional series for introductory level rod builders. Best Regards...

I agree with Joel, I have been building fly rods, and rebuilding & repairing fly rods for over 10 years now. I have always used Al Campbell's twelve part series on "Building a Graphie Rod". If you want I can send you the series by Al Campbell in PDF formate (requires the free Adobe Reader download).

This has a bunch of the best info I have seen, including Al Campbell's series as well as video tutorials on most aspects of rod building.
