Ok Warren & Jack or anybody else for that matter, what kind of flies should we be tying for the Townsend outing?

    Keven,

Since it will only be for a couple of days and the weather has been very hot, I do not intend to do a lot of scouting the mountain streams and spend most, if not all my time, in the Little River fishing for smallmouth. I do not want to spend my entire 2 days there just scouting the streams. I will do my scouting on my next trip that I hope will be for at least a week.

So, I will be using larger flies and fishing for smallmouth bass. You may need to wait for someone else to respond for what flies they will be using for trout fishing.

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.

The one that comes to mind... and hopefully there will be a bunch... October Caddis is a good one. Stimi's are pretty good too. (Assuming we're talking mountain streams and trout.) Decent sized nymphs should work too.

    John R,

"October Caddis is a good one"

Are you recommending the "wet" Caddis fly pattern or the "dry" Caddis fly pattern? If one was to tie up the "wet" Caddis fly pattern, what size hook? I have found some patterns that call for a size 6 hook. If you can post a pattern and picture of what you are recommending, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Warren

I'll be using October Caddis in Idaho so I'm all set!! It's other name is "Cinnamon Sedge" which should be a clue to the color!! A 14 2X long worked out west and the ones i've seen here could be a 10 or 12. I've seen them in Idaho that are a long #6 or 8!!

Well, since Jack will be using the October Caddis, I have to assume it will be a "dry".

Does anyone know if the "wet" October Caddis will work or not?

For those who have not figured it out by now, I am not much for fishing dry flies! : )

    WarrenP,

If the October Caddis are hatching or have hatched recently a wet caddis should do the trick, especially if on a light wire hook and fished in or just under the surface film. I've had many takes on wet flies during an October Caddis hatch.

Happiness is wading boots that never have a chance to dry out.
