I used about 6 ft of 25 lb. mono & about 2 ft of 15 lb. test tie able wire on my pike leaders. I also was tossing flies about 6" long. Most books I read about fly fishing for pike recommend a 9 wt.

I use an 8 or 9wt fly rod for pike. never used wire. I use flouro 80 lb shock tippet instead. I also use big salt water flies, up to eleven inches!

I use an 8wt with about a 7' length of 30 lb test Sufix monofilament, and uni to uni a couple of feet of12 lb- 15 lb Berkley Steelon or Seven Strand Sevalon to the end. Smaller lb test steel knots better than higher lb test. I tie the fly on with a non-slip mono loop.
