Thread: Eastern Flyfishing Magazine - Opinions?

Default Eastern Flyfishing Magazine - Opinions?

My 1 year free subscription of Eastern Flyfishing is up... and I'm torn about renewing it. Seems like it's has some pretty relevant articles (I do live in the East)... but a lot of it seems to glorify the rivers a bit much.

What are other people's opinions on this magazine?

(fwiw, I'm a subscriber to Flyfishing and Tying Journal (which I really like), and Fly Rod and Reel. I signed up for the 5 year deal with FFTJ and got the FRR as a gift (groomsman gift... and I'll let that subscription lapse). I also subscribe to Rodmaker. Just to give an idea of what I already subscribe to).

I keep getting the advertisements but have never seen an actual magazine. I love rivers, so it sounds intriguing. As a warmwater devotee I've also noticed in their fliers some pictures of my kind of fish, so that is also interesting. Outside of Fly Tyer, the rest are of no interest except for the last two stories in each, Tapley and Geriesch. It's cheaper to buy their books. JGW

    Hey Hex,

Don't all the mags glorify the rivers and steams to a degree. I like what I have seen so far and really like to get info on places in our region or within a days drive. Then I can go there and see if what they write is true.

    Hextall,

I don't subscribe to Eastern Flyfishing, but I do to Southwest and Northwest Flyfishing and have since their inception, and I absolutely love those magazines.

Great Articles relevant to where "I" fish, or travel to fish, and specifically about some of the waters I fish.

I don't know about you, but when I read the other rags that I get that are about places I may never fish, I quickly peruse the article's and finish the mag, then just throw it on the pile, but when it's about home waters or area's close by, or stuff I actually fish or want to fish, I read with a heightened interest.

When we are preparing to go on a trip, all of us try and get as much information as we can so we can be prepared.

Just because a magazine "Pimps" out a stream (Vocelli, I mean no disrespect, I hope I'm interpreting pimp the way you meant it) doesn't mean that it's going to ruin your favorite fishin hole.

When you inquire or share about a place on this board or any board on the intranet, how many people do you think read the replies, or permanently placed articles? You can literally find out information on just about any place on earth you want to fish from your computer, it's truly a small world today!.

If your stream or lake is a featured location in a magazine, it may see some increased pressure for a while, usually it's more from locals that didn't know about the place, than from people flying in from all over the country to fish your "Secret" place.

I know when I see that they are featuring a location I fish or have been wanting to go to, I get really excited and can't wait to read about it. You never know I just might learn something I didn't know about the place , or that helps me plan for a future trip. It might actually convince me to quit putting off that trip I've been saying I'd like to do there.

I read for both knowledge and entertainment purposes, I get both from these two magazines. High quality magazine, appeasing layout, great article's relevant to "MY" part of the country and some pretty fantastic photography to boot.

What's our other choice, "Field & Stream" Hahahahaha!!!

    Just my .02 worth!!!

IT reads as passionate about the rivers as the people that they interview talk about the rivers. I think that magazine is a very classy publication!!!

I have also been very impressed lately with the quality of articles in Fish and Fly magazine, excellent photography too.

Took the free issue and personally didn't like it. Seems to be way to much advertising, my money would be better spent on materials.

Thanks for all you guys' opinions... Like many, I like fish porn just as much as the next guy.

I'll take a look at the issues again I have (I think I have some time to re-up my subscription).

I like the magazine a lot. I wonder how much it would cost if there were no advertising. Remember GSJ in the beginning?

    Vocelli,

I agree with your comments, and NEVER like to see fisheries Management dump a truck load of fish into a Wild Fish Stream to appease the masses, that's just "WRONG", Period!!!

I believe that many anglers get all excited when they hear about a "Hot" new place to fish, they travel there, "Spend Money" (Hint, Hint), catch very few fish if any, and then say the place "sucks".

We all have favorite fishing waters we've come to know only through years and years of fishing them, through thick and thin times. A magazine writes about it and we worry about the abuse it's going to get.

How many times have you taken someone to a special fishin place and you just wack em and they only catch a few if any.

Most of the time it's due to you having an intimate relationship with that water. This cannot be garnered through any magazine article nor on-line musings, just years and years of trial and error.

My hope is that Fisheries Management doesn't do this kind of thing on any kind of large scale, that would definately be detrimental to the right way of doing things and is extremely hazardous fish management with the already threatened Wild Fish populations.

Maybe one day I'll get to venture and fish the beautiful streams of Pennsylvania that I read and hear so much about. When I do, just maybe we will bump into each other and can start a friendship "The Old Fashion Way", by shaking hands and introducing ourselves.
