    Default JC's SALMONFLY - Fly of the Week - June 7, 2010

    JC's SALMONFLY

Just over a year ago, late May '09, I was on the Henry's Fork down in SE Idaho and took an opportunity to capture (and quickly release) an adult salmonfly. I held on only long enough to get a couple good pictures, including one of his undersides - what I like to call the fishies' point of view.

    John,
I didn't know if I should ask this here, or on the Fly tying forum ...
When you are tying in the deer hair, and trimming it that short on the front end ... do you use instant glue to hold everything together?
    Dynamite fly!!
Trouts don't live in ugly places.

A friend is not who knows you the longest, but the one who came and never left your side.

Don't look back, we ain't goin' that way.

...I trim the hair a little longer than desired wing length, take a couple firm wraps to flair the ends, and then wrap tightly through the butts a good number of times. I do check the wing before moving on, and if I have any doubts about it, will add some head cement at that point. But that is not usually necessary. After finishing the fly, I do put a liberal amount of head cement on the final tie in point, some of which probably seeps into the hair butts also.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment on this fly. Truth be told, salmonfly adults aren't around all that long in most places, which means the LF Golden Stone is the one that gets the most work.
    The fish are always right.
