I spent some time in SouthFork on a trip and did go up for a day to Creede. I would recommend staying in Creede for a few days as it's really a neat little place with cool shops and great little places to eat. There is plenty to do there. Southfork is pretty neat but it doesn't have much to do other then Golf which I suck at and/or fish. Do yourself a favor and go to Creede. You could also head up a little North/West to the Black Gorge for some fishing. In Creede You must take the old mining road up into the mountains, It's a must see....

    Brad,

Really good info, just what I needed to plan the trip.

Gonna play it by ear and do some exploring once I get there.

    Thanks

The second picture of Okie and his kids looks to be just outside the Underground mining museum. Take a tour if you can. When they shut the mining down in town about 10-15 years ago, some of the old miners actually dug out a bunch of mountainside to make a community center, a firestation and the museum. The museum gives you a flavor of what mining was like in these mountains. Be sure to where your heavy jackets, though--it is cold in there.

Looks like the Rock, Mineral, and Fossil show is the 7th and 8th of August---be sure to check that out if you are there during that time.

Yes, that's the old mining station, now the museum in Creede. The other picture is of a mining area in the mountains about 4-5 miles down the road, trail. It's a gravel road and pretty hard on your brakes so be careful. It is however very well worth the time to go see as the beauty of the area is off the charts. You have many fishing options in the area too. there is a small moutain lake outside of Southfork that is great to take a canoe on. I tore up the Trout on it. You have the Rio Grande and the Animos near. sure I didn't spell that right... Also, lots of small creeks in the area. Good luck with the fish and have a great trip.
