Thread: broken rod tip

    Default broken rod tip

A few years back I took to the venture of building my own rod. While it was in the corner by the door somehow about 2 or 3 inches of the tip broke off. I am thinking of taking it back up again so how can I tell what size tip to get to salvage the rod, or do I just scrap the project and start over? It is an 8' 4wt low end rod.

I'd glue another tiptop on it and go fishing. Have done that to rods myself. Maybe this will help. You need a sizing chart.

A new tip is inexpensive and worth trying. If you don't like the way it casts you'll only be out a couple of dollars. If it works you will have salvaged the rod. tips are measured in 64ths of an inch. To find what size you need take a calipers or micrometer and measure the rod blank diameter at the point where the end of the tip will come. If you don't have those tools take your rod to any tool shop and tell them what you need. I'd be surprised if they charge you anything just to measure the tip. One sixty-fourth is roughly 15 thousandths.
I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.
