Default Trout in the Classroom brook trout release 4-22-10 underwater photo+malformed jaw

Our local Trout Unlimited Chapter just completed our 15th. school release program this year with nine to go. While photographing the brook trout in the transport cooler I noticed one of the fry with a malformed lower jaw. It's at the top middle of the attached photo. Also tried an underwater shot as one of the teachers released the last three brookies. Thought it looked sort of neat with the nail polished finger in the photo. Used my Pentax Optio 6.0 Waterproof camera. They carried the cooler streamside and put one or two trout in a plastic cup for each of the kids to release. These students are from Craig County, VA Middle School and they and the teachers all showed up in lime green T-shirts for "Earth Day" yesterday and had some really neat printing on the back. They had an oval logo with a trout in the middle and it had all their signatures on the trout. Surrounding the trout it said: "Craig County 2010-Trout in the Classroom Trout Unlimited - Mr. A. Saunders 8th. grade." The front of the T-shirt had a trout leaping out of the water with "Earth Day Craig County 2010" print above it. They gave each of our TU members a T-shirt in appreciation of helping with their program. After every release we set up three presentation stations and divide the kids into three groups and they rotate through. We have a fly tying demonstration table, two of our folks, also members of the Save Our Streams group, net samples of the "critters in each stream we release at and put the "bugs" in styrofoam coolers and identify them for the kids and the last station is ten fly rods with hoola hoops for targets and we teach them how to cast using a piece of yarn to avoid any hook ups. All in all it makes for an interesting if busy day. Takes about 3-4 hours after they arrive and we usually stop for a short lunch. Great bunch of kids this time.

Excellent report and a great project. What a way to get our young people involved in fly fishing, let alone stewardship of our planet.

What a wonderful lesson!! When a young person (or, really, anyone) has had a hand at making something, they're far less likely to cause it harm.
Trouts don't live in ugly places.

A friend is not who knows you the longest, but the one who came and never left your side.

Don't look back, we ain't goin' that way.

    Betty,
On the other hand you should see my radio controlled model airplanes I MADE/built and was learning to fly them . "Harm" would be a mild word.

PS: But I do agree with the spirit of your statement. And certainly with GrnMtn Man's TU Chapter project.
