It's pretty obvious why everyone emphasizes the black egg sack when tying flies for this hatch.

The fish are always right.
Nice photos. Thanks.
There were reports of Skwalas on the Jefferson at least two weeks ago.
How long have they been hatching on the Bitterroot?
John,
Looks bigger than the ones I tied up - #8 maybe? Looks like I was off on the colors, too; need to use less yellow, more olive. Thanks for the pics.
Regards,
Scott

.... and welcome to the Bulletin Board, pittendrigh.
There have been skwalas out on the Bitterroot for a couple weeks now. I've only fished that hatch a time or two, and caught a few on dries, but some of the folks around here have been doing very well, mostly higher up in the system than I have been fishing.
We are starting to hear reports of skwalas out on Rock Creek, also, at least down the lower end.

.... but this gal looks somewhat darker in the pic than she did in real life. Whereas the abdomen looks very dark in the photo, it was much more golden olive to brown olive in real life. I think that may be because when I was looking at her the segments of the abdomen were more extended, showing her color more completely. I think the color of your bullethead pattern was very close. A little bigger egg sack, maybe ??
As to size, I didn't think to put in anything for scale, other than my fingers. I think you pretty much nailed the size with the flies you sent to me. I'm going to get back out for some dry fly fishing in the next few days and will go with your bullethead pattern. Maybe I'll get a chance to get a pic of both a natural and your fly together.
