That's a huge crappie. Did that come from public water? We don't have many that big here in PA.
Very nice fish! I'm afraid if I caught 10 of them that size, they wouldn't need to worry about getting back in the water cause they'd have a date with some hot oil!
Nice crappie, and getting him in the water again is WAY more important than a perfect picture. Besides, that shot says all it needs to say just as it is. Nice job.
If it swims and eats, it'll eat a fly.
Yes, this was caught in public water and yes I think about keeping a few every spring but so far haven't.
They are just so much fun to catch, I can see them come up out of a beaver hut to grab the flies.
brhoff;
Would you mind devulging the identity of the fly that took a beating ?? Inquiring minds !
Truth be told, I don't have any plans to "top this one"...just fish whenever I can!
I was really hoping to get one on the first cast but it didn't happen.
Here is the fly used for the first part of the morning, until I snagged it in a tree...I then switched to a Briminator with a ruby red bead head...worked about as well but I really like being able to see the fly in this location. Clear water and fast strikes over the beaver hut.
Pretty basic Mustad 3366 in size 8 or 10, sparkle chenille, flo yellow marabou, chain bead, and oversized ssaddle hackle (Chinese).
Also added another from last spring...same spot.
This years went about 12" or so....that is a one piece 10" handle from Janns with rattan added so i would guess around 12 would be right.
Nice handle on your home-built rod. Is that birch bark? JGW
