I purchased some CDC yesterday and tied my first dry flies last night. I used the CdC for the post, and it did not feel right. I just watched some of the video in the link from Normands great thread below, and it looks like the post in one of the videos is a synthetic material. Wht would you guys use for making a post on a dry fly? Also, the tail was a painbrush material, would calf hair work on a dry?

I use polypropelyene (sp?) yarn for my posts...or calf body hair. The natural material I like better for fishing, but the synthetic is far easier to work with at the vise.

For the tails, you can use whatever you'd use for any other dry: microfibbets (paint brush fibers), spade hackle, CDL, moose hair, buck tail, etc.

I like poly yarn for my posts on parachutes also. I've tried about everything and always go back to poly yarn. Dab a little Gink into the post and it will float forever!

Congo Hair (synthetic like EP fibers); sheds water, easy to work with, lots of colors, cheap.
