    Default Austin Texas

I am a musician and I will be travelling to Austin Texas for the Folk Alliance festival from Feb.10th-13th.I was wondering if anyone knew of any urban /do it yourself fly fishing opportunities in the city. Any websites with reg's and such would be a help too. Thanks

As one who lived in and around the River City for 16 years, I would reccomend that you try Town Lake. From shore you can catch large mouth bass, perch (bluegills to us Yankees) and even some crappie.

If you have access to a vehicle and can get out of the city, drive down to San Marcos and fish the San Marcos River, or the Guadelupe. The Guadelupe has year round trout fishing. Both are good for smallies as well. Norht of Austin is Round Rock. My old stomping grounds. There is a park off of down town that you can fish from shore and catch some bass and blue gills.

It's pretty much the clearing house for all things related to Texas fly fishing.

    Ed,

I just got back from San Marcos, Texas. I was down there for the first 2 weeks of the year!

If you do get some time, do yourself a favor and do some fishing!!! The San Marcos, Blanco, and Llano are all in good shape for fishing right now. The water seemed to be a little on the low side while I was down, but it didn't stop the fish from biting!

I am not sure about the status of the Guadalupe River right now (I didn't have a chance to get there.) But from what I have been told, the water is down, and the fishing is really good! As has been said before, the Guadalupe river is USA's southern most trout stream!

One last thing, there is a new Cabelas in Buda, Texas that is really nice to go and visit. Tell Daniel in the fly shop that Reggie from Kentucky said "Hello, and that the fishing in the Cumberland is EXCELLENT right now!!!" Dan is a fun guy to spend a few minutes talking about fishing! He is from my area, and I love to make him jealous about the local waters I he left behind!!! HEHEHE!!!!

Anyway, have a good time in the Live Music Capital of the USA!!! Also, make sure to eat some of the GREAT food there as well!!!

    Sincerely,
    Reg

PS San Marcos and Buda are only about 20 minutes South of Austin on I-35!!!

I am staying at the Hampton Inn at 200 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin TX 78701. Can anyone tell me how far town lake is from there.

I was just looking at the google maps and it appears that Town Lake actually looks like a river. It seems to be 1/2 dozen blocks to the lake. It seems worthwhile to bring the rod in that case.
