    Default Curved scissors

What would one use curved scissors for, I can't think of a reason to own curved blades, and how exactly, would it be useful?

    Sculpting bugs and the like?

    Mike, ...

A friend uses them for trimming the heads on muddlers.

I don't , ... then again, ... my muddlers look like a hybride between Godzilla and King Kong

    Mike,

They work very well for trimming deer hair bodies.

Also, the curve of the blade gives benefits for some clipping chores, since you can use the meat of the blades yet have the tips curved away from the fly.

    Good Luck!

LOL, I have tied a few of those Kong-Zilla Muddlers you speak off, kinda like a bad day at the hair salon. A few quickly tied, butcher-headed muddlers when your about to leap out the door for a day's outing is better than no muddlers at all.

    Newfoundlander,

I have curved and straight sissors at my tying desk. I use the straight ones more than the curved ones. One of my "go to" flies has a body made up of rabbit fur trapped in a dubbing loop and wrapped up the shank. After this you need to trim the rabbit fur down to form a "cigar" shaped body. The curved sissors makes this a very easy chore. They do serve a need, but, maybe not as much as the straight and when that need comes up, I am glad I have them.

    Mike,

I have not one, but two pairs of curved scissors at my tying bench. One small one (made by Tiemco) and a larger one (made by Dr. Slick). I use these to rough shape Muddler heads and deer hair bodies. To finish shaping the fly I use a razor blade. Since I love to tie flies with spun deer hair I use them quite a bit.

    Regards,

    Alberto

Chris, now you have me curious. I would like to see a picture of one of your monster muddlers. I have visions of a D-grade horror movie, "The Muddler that Ate Sheboygan!"

On topic, I have only straight scissors on my fly tying bench. I need to get another pair or two.

    regards,
    Ed
