Thread: Second Attempt

  1. #1

    Default Second Attempt

I have moved into a very dark side of fly tying. This is my second attempt at one of the Classics. I have a very deep and passionate appreciation for those who tie these flies.

This one is very poorly tied. The tail topping has the wrong profile, the tag should have been fine tensil instead of medium, the under wing and over wing are not set low enough, the veil is too high and I crowded the gut. As fun as they are to tie, they are just as frustrating.

Just thought I would show a bunch of the mistakes for anyone thinking of tying Classics.

I most definitely could live with mistakes like these! Good looking fly!

    Rookie,

While I agree with your own assessment of the fly, it's only your second attempt. Don't beat yourself up. It's a learning process, and your doing just that.

    The colors are very nice.

If it's not right, fix it immediately.

Aged Sage, Greybeard, Kelkay, honestly, thank you. However this is an example of how not to tie these flies. I have learned just how many mistakes can be made tying just one fly and that was my real reason for posting this one.

Ron, you're spot on. I think these Classics are the most beautiful flies ever tied. (Not mine). I have such an appreciation for what the good tiers go through. The amount of concentration I have put into a poorly tied fly is unblievable.

I don't know about the rest of the bunch but I'll be interested in seeing you post a fly that you're happy with. I won't hold my breath because it seems you set the standards for yourself very high. More power to you and good luck.
