Default KG's SOUTH FORK SPECIAL - Fly of the Week - February 8, 2010

    KG's SOUTH FORK SPECIAL

This fly was developed as a result of a combination of triggers I have found on other flies over the years. It can resemble a mayfly, a caddis or just any old bug. Once again I use chartreuse wire for the ribbing as I have had much success with this over the past several years on many of my nymph ties. I also tie this fly with a fairly fat and squatty body which may be why it appeals to caddis feeders. All I know is this is a very effective pattern, but watch out, if there are whitefish in your waters this fly seems to be like candy to them 'thus the name' South Fork Special where it is effective, too effective on the resident whitefish of that river.

    Default Nice presentation ....

.... will always get a whitefish on the South Fork. Well, almost always.

It's great to see someone tout a fly that does well for those guys. And I'm sure it does well for the trouts also.

VERY NICE job on the pics and write up, Kelly.

Thanks, guys! Not sure what happened to the photos though, not as clear as last time. Oh well, at least you get the general idea. This is really a top producer for me on most waters that I fish.

Nice tutorial & fly. That chartruse wire adds a third highlight to the fly. I'd eat it.

    Hi Kelly,

Nice tutorial. I really like the attention to detail in the steps for the legs. I like how it utilises a feather where the fibres would be too long otherwise.
