Ouch! Doesn't look like the wings on my flies made it through the mail so well... They look better in person, I promise!

Overall, looks like a nice set of flies folks!

Thumbs up Not bad for a Beginner!

    Quivira kid:

That is the nature of After-shaft material, just remember it is not what you perceive that is important in the fly pattern, it is what the fish perceives! Toss most flies into (onto) the water, and the pattern takes on a new look wet than when it was dry and in the fly box.

As Swapmeister, I thought you did a great job of dressing the hook, with a hard to manage material.

Besides you are a Beginner, (but not for too much longer) by the end of the April Swap, you will become a Intermediate!

I think the head proportion on mine is getting better. Also, I started with gold wire ribbing but it was so thin that it got lost in the dubbing so I switched to a slightly thicker copper wire. I think the segments came out better that way.

For the abdomen and thorax I used pre-bagged hare dubbing instead of cutting it from the mask that I have. I've got to sit down and figure out how to get consistent dubbing from that mask.

For the thorax/legs section I used my new dubbing loop tool to create a dubbing loop and then I twisted the fur into that loop. I quickly learned that less is more and to spread the dubbing out rather than letting it clump up. But it was much easier to keep the dubbing where I wanted it, to tie in the wing case, and to make the head.

I'd also say that I tied these much faster than the last group.

One more lesson: I have to remember that after I tie a dozen of these for the swap, tie another half dozen or so for myself.

P.S. Steve. I saw your other post. I had the post office calculate the return postage for me. If it wasn't enough or you need more then PM me and I'll gladly help out.

I like the dubbing selection boxes that have 12 different colors.

I too have struggled with getting good dubbing from a hares mask. I do, however, like how dubbing cut from natural skins (aka hares mask) has different lengths, colors, and textures. I think that the variation in texture makes it more difficult to apply, however it creates a buggier overall look.

I have also found that you can combine hair and/or fibers from just about anything to make dubbing. I just hope that my wife does not notice the bare spots in the carpet!

    Default Carpet Scrape Fibers

Carpet Scrape Fibers, are made of various man-made materials, many of which are also iridescent (a rainbow play of color). Most carpet fibers are course and stiff, but their are also thread fibers that can be used, by scrape pieces of cloth, that is unraveled....

A fine example is shown in Ronn Lucas's "Gocha Girl"

gotta say, I like the Red PT that Cold threw together. I have done the same and they work well...see the post on red thread.

Found my p-tails at Michael's in the fake flower section. they have feathers in bunches too, biots, PT, and others, dyed in a buncha colors.
