I like to dye materials. I have been doing alot of marabou lately. There is alot to learn. I am pretty successful with natural materials, haven't figured out how to do synthetics yet, but most of those come in alot of colors.

The same dye will not produce the same results with different materials. Feathers are easy for me. They will take a nice sheen and I come close to what color I am after.

Marabou needs a brighter tone to get the same colors as feathers.

For example, for a burnt orange marabou, I used the folowing dyes, orange, deep orange, then added dark brown, red, flourescent red. Came out a great brown, which is useful, but definitely not a burnt orange.

Next time I will use hot orange and fiery brown. I think that will come out a shiny burnt orange.

Not sure why I like it, maybe it's the challenge to see if I can get what I'm after.

The dyes I use are Veniard, fly dye, jacquard and rit.

Last fall I was able to buy about 70 small bottles of Veniard, stuff is at least 40 years old, kept out of the sun. Not sure if it is going to be any good. Anybody know??

Thanks,
Bob
