    Default Waiwhakaiho River (New Plymouth)

    Hi,

Went down to New Plymouth this past weekend. That's about a 5 or 6 hour drive (taking it easy) from Auckland. We went down for a friend's wedding, which was very nice. We arrived on Friday and in town there is the Waiwhakaiho River, which has a good population of brown trout with the odd rainbow tossed in. I gave a try at a nice pool right in town in the evening at the corner of Constance Street and Rifle Range road, but no luck. On Saturday, (yesterday), tried a bit further upstream in the morning before the wedding. Got one that weighed in at 1 kg (2.2 lbs) on a size 12 claret nymph.

Yes, this one came back to the motel for our lunch. It was very good (stuffed it with mixed herbs, some sliced ginger, red onion, butter, lemon pepper, and a bit of salt). I don't keep a fish very often, but I do enjoy them when I do.
