Minnesota Red Lake Reservation, commercially fished the Red Lakes (Upper and Lower), for walleye, as part of a Reservation Commercial Enterprise. In less than 10 years, they drained the lake of all Walleye Fish, which has cause a ecosystem disaster.
Now the State Department of Natural Resourses, is restocking the lake with hatchery raise Walleyes. The process will take over 10 years to restore the lakes to the original levels of Walleye in the lakes. These are very large bodies of water, and the cost of this restocking will cost in excess of $12,000,000.00. Minnsota DNR and the Red Lake Reservation, are spliting the costs.
But the question is why did this have to happen in the first place. Was it a matter of greed, or quick money from a free source of income? It could have been lack of knowledge of "Cause and Effect". Maybe a little of all the above.
The fact is that the cost of repairing the damage done to the ecosystem of the lake, far exceeds the revenue generated from this Reservation Commercial Fishing Enterprise.
These instances of havesting native fish, for commercial gain, will continue to become worse and more damaging, as the demand for more food is needed to supply the ever increasing population.
To much of the world, catching fish is considered a low cost alternative, to starvation. That is why so many of the worlds fisheries are in such terrible straits!
Many condemn Commerical Fish Farms, but what are the alternatives, as the population of the world keeps increasing, and the amount of food, is not increasing at the same rate?

Oh, ... and just to keep the thread alive ... [url=http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/fishing/2002190756_makah26.html:b7620]http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/fishing/2002190756_makah26.html[/url:b7620]
Something else to ponder when you're walking down the aisle of the fish counter at Safeway and "wild" salmon is on special ... Ever wonder why it's on special ??

I support the rights of Natives to fish as guaranteed by the soverign treaties the US signed with Native nations. That being said, having a right to do something does not make it good practice. I would wish that all nations are able to have sustainable practices in regards to fishing, wildlife management and land use
jed
I also stand 100% behind honoring Native American treaties. But when those treaties were written, traditional fishing methods like fish traps and dip nets were used, not nylon gill nets. These traditional methods allowed a portion of the fish to escape and spawn the next generation. If a commercial fisherman, regardless of his heritage, is going to use modern technology, he should also be bound by the same rules as everyone else.
Bump, ...
Anyone gotten any feedback from RUI ??
