Definitely sending out prayers for a full recovery for him. It is a good reminder that every second is a gift, no matter how bad it may seem.
As your friend recovers, it might be difficult for him to find ways to fish, but I've seen some stuf about this organization, Project Healing Waters (www.projecthealingwaters.org), on one of the fly fishing tv shows I watch. Their purpose is to use fly fishing as a tool to help injured soldiers to recover, among other things.
I've not really dealt with them, but maybe by contacting someone there, you can find some accessible fishing spots for your friend, dependent on his condition, or at least some tips on how to get him back on the water.
I know for me, in the darkest times, it can be brightest on the river. Hope this helps some.
