I make a good percentage of the dubbing that I use, especially the dubbing that I use for nymph patterns. Why? Because I want to. I hunt, so I have a very hard time throwing away the perfectly good hide of a rabbit or a squirrel just to go to the store and buy a package of rabbit dubbing. Instead I use fabric dye and kool-aid to color the natural furs, blend them with various synthetic fibers, and stuff it into my homeade dubbing boxes and film canisters. To me it's just more time that I can spend dreaming about fish on the end of my line, helps fulfill my commitment to use as much of the game animal that I take as I possibly can, and is better for me than watching tv and eating cheetos. I also dry my own bird skins (pheasant, quail, and duck), dye my own deer hair for spinning, and make my own float indicators. All of these things I do because I enjoy doing them. In the long run I save some money, but mostly I enjoy tinkering when I can't fish.
