Default My 2010 fishing report thread

Well my first trip in 2010 was supposed to be a great trip. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you intend though. The plans were simple take two of my friends out and fish the same river that I fished last Sunday ( http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/s...ad.php?t=32999 ).

I was woken up not by my alarm but by a horrible cramp in my calf. You know the type where you go from a dead sleep to jumping out of bed. I guess that was the first sign of how the day was going to go. After I took care of the cramp I turned off my alarm as it was going to go off in 10 minutes and started to get ready.

When I was getting ready I heard the tell tale sound of a new text message from my cell phone. It was Jeremy saying that he couldn?t make it. This was because he forgot to pick up his 2010 license. This should have been clue 2 as how the day was going to turn out.

Since it had been snowing all day I decided to take my 4x4. I headed out to Chris's house to pick him up. We loaded up the truck and headed out. The freeway was in pretty bad shape; normally I drive 80-85 going there. However with the conditions I was doing around 50 (the speed limit is 75).

We got to our exit and stopped for some breakfast; we ate quickly and headed out. I noticed that we burned through a lot more gas then we should have. I took a look and found out why, my wife left the vehicle in 4 wheel auto (there is no visual queue to let you know it is in this setting).

As we made our way up the road the conditions went downhill and I had to put the vehicle into 4 wheel high. You could not see the road at this point so navigation was done by using the snow markers on either side of the road.

We made it to the turnoff and headed down into the canyon. When I first pulled off the road I stopped and put the vehicle into 4 wheel low as the conditions warranted it. On our way down it was pretty hard to make out where the road was. I was starting to think we should just turn around when I saw a plow ahead. Sweet I thought to myself and I followed the plow down the hill.

The plow turned off on top of the dam and I went by. Driving over the dam and down the second road I saw another plow. Chris said that they had to keep the road open because it is the only way into Prairie. We kept driving towards our first fishing spot of the day.

We made it to the first run we wanted to fish. A feeling of relief came over me as we had made it. I did overshoot the run by a little bit so I decided to turn around. We were on our way back up to the run when it happened. I did not see a drift on the right side of the road. Yes I managed to get stuck.

It took us two and a half hours of digging, rocking, using the floor mats for extra traction to get out. I remember hitting the gas and feeling the tires grab and pull me back up onto the road (The truck had slid a bit off the road during the course of trying to get out). Looking at the hole where I got out of I couldn?t believe it. That thing was about 2.5' deep. I parked in the middle of the road and got wadered up.

Forget this I am going fishing I said to Chris. I had not seen another car or plow all morning on this section so I decided just to leave my vehicle in the middle of the road. I made my way down to the water and began to fish. It was not long until I got my first take.

I set the hook and it was fish on. I fought this bow and got him close enough to see. He was not a monster or anything but was nice. I went to net him and he popped off. Darn! I don't believe it I thought to myself. I resumed fishing. I ended up LDRing every other fish I hooked that day. I did get a few close enough to see and most of them were bows. I did see one whitefish in there.

I don't know if I was flustered or what but I could not land a frickin fish to save my life that day. Chris did not do much better either. The only fish he landed was a 24" sucker. Chris was starting to freeze and said that he wanted to go. By this time it was two in the afternoon. Personally I wanted to stay but it is no fun being out on the river if your feet and legs are freezing.

We headed back home not really saying much. As we drove back we laughed as we passed a police roadblock. Yes they had actually closed the highway that we took to get there. This must have happened after we had gone through. It makes sense though as it literally had snowed hard all that day too. For those of you asking about the lack of pics in this report I will say this. Yes I took the camera but I was a bit too flustered to actually take any pics at all.

    Yes, but....

    1. You got out of the house
    2. You got to go to the water
    3. You got your string jerked by fish
    4. It helped the "shack nasties"

and if the truth was known...

    5. You still enjoyed yourself and you did get to go fishing...

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.

    Sasha -

A gem of a report, for sure.

Like who needs a camera and pics to totally enjoy your day out ?? Quite the adventure, for sure.

Glad you got out and got your report filed. Makes getting skunked two times in a row up here a lot easier to take.

    John

P.S. If you use this report as the beginning of a continuing thread for all your outings in 2010, we can continue to enjoy how the adventure started and relive it for the ages !!

Well now that I had a chance to relax a bit I am actually kind of laughing about the whole day.

I would use this as my 2010 report thread, but I can't seem to change the thread title. I tried in the advanced edit function but it did not change it.

I think an admin can change the title of a thread.

I was wanting to do that to my Pecos thread as well, same thing.

sounds like a helluva day there. Up where I was in Pecos on the first I got stuck twice in the snow but I am used to it now and have all the proper "getting your two wheel drive truck unstuck" equipment:

    1. Lots of sand tubes
    2. shovel
    3. chains
    4. fire starting material and Jack Daniels (in case all others fail)

The worse thing about it is I am getting stuck in like 3" of snow.

    It's pretty pathetic...
The sport is so royal that there is neither gentle nor villein, if it knew of it and loved it well, who would not be more honoured for that reason by all who understand it.

    Sasha -

It seems to me most of your days on the water are quite a bit different - so this is a great title for your continuing thread.

By the time we throw FIVE STARS on it, and people get to following it, who's going to notice the title, anyway ??

OR, you could just start a new thread with the title you want, and copy this report in as the first post ??

So the other day my friend Jeremy called me and wanted to know if I wanted to go fishing on Sunday. Not wanting to pass on the opportunity to go fish I agreed. Although I just had fished this river I was still excited about going fishing. Plus not having to drive was a nice change

He got to my house at around 0615; we threw my gear in the car and headed out. On the way to the river we stopped off for some doughnuts the breakfast of champions Not long after we were back on the road and heading to our destination.

Once we got to the river we drove to the first spot that we were going to fish. On the way up we saw fish rising everywhere. Jeremy said ?man if it like this we should have a killer day?. After we parked we got out and got geared up. After we were all geared up we noticed Paul?s truck (he shot me an email saying he was going to meet up with us). Paul and Matt got out, we all BSed for a bit. Paul was very nice and handed us a small box of a dozen flies that he had tied. He said that these were that new variation that he made and that he had a killer day with them last Monday. We thanked him; he said that they were going to go check out another hole.

Jeremy and I made our way down to the run and started to fish. I will admit that it took me a bit longer than I expected to get my first hook up. Unfortunately this ended up being a LDR. I went right back to fishing and got another strike. This time when I set the hook the rod came to life and stayed that way. This fish had some nice power, and made a few runs. I landed him a short time later and took a few photos and sent him on his way.

I asked Jeremy if he wanted to try that spot and he said sure. He fished it for a bit and a few LDRs. He then said that he was going to head up river. I moved back into my spot and continued fishing. I managed to land two more before he returned.

When he returned I let him have the top of the run, and I moved to the bottom of the run. I was having a bit of a dry spell so I decided to switch and throw some streamers. I only had two takes on the streamers and unfortunately I missed getting a good hook set and lost both fish.

I decided to go back to nymphing. Meanwhile Jeremy was at the top of the run still having the same luck as he had been having all morning. I got a new nymph rig tied on and made my way to the bottom of the run. I threw out my first cast and shortly thereafter my I saw my indicator go crazy. I thought to myself man this thing must have hammered that fly. This fish had some serious power much more than the previous fish I had on the end of my line that day. I landed this fish took a couple of shots and sent him on his way.

After that fish Jeremy suggested that we go check out another spot. So we went back to the car and headed to a different hole. When we got there I said to Jeremy ?go ahead and fish the hole and get your skunk off, I am going to take some shots?. It did not take Jeremy long to get the skunk off. He was rewarded for his efforts with this nice ?little? guy.

continued due to 10 photo per post limit........
