You got it. Hen hackle tends to soak up water where cock doesn't.

    Default Hackle 101

Here is one of the places you can become an expert on Hackle.
My Daughter, Liz wrote it several years ago. It was first published here on FAOL. I do not have my fingers on the location but is is also on our site. Here is the URL for you to read.

Read this also. It will answer a lot of your questions on tying and speed up the learning curve. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/beginners/

    Default Al Campbell's Beginners Series

I first took fly tying lessons at the "Fly Fishing Cabin" in Little Canada, MN.

Then a year later I joined FAOL in October of 1997. Even though it was just starting, I saw something that was worth coming back to every week.

Al Campbell was my mentor on FAOL, and he built up a wonderful Fly Tying Series; for Beginners, Intermediate, & Advance Fly Tying.

Your daugthers article is found on FAOL in the "Fly Fishing for Beginners" archives What is Hackle?

    ~Parnelli

Side Note: Denny and Elizabeth Conrad raise some of the best hackle, I have ever used, and they are my go to people when I am looking for material.

That is an excellent article by your daughter Liz and one I tell folks about when they ask questions about hackle.
