Thread: Old School Chest Pack Used By Dave Hughes

Default Old School Chest Pack Used By Dave Hughes

I was recently watching an excellent video with Dave Hughes doing some small stream casting and noticed his chest pack. It looked perfect! It was aluminum and fit square in his chest. I have a fishpond and have outgrown its capacity for fly storage - this one looked like it could do the trick and I'm not looking for the next gimmick, rather a proven classic.

Anyone know where I can get it?

I think I know what you are looking for.

This may be the more modern version in plastic instead of aluminum.

Sure looks heavy. But man, I could pack a ton (pun intended) of flies in there.

I use a Fly Box made in '77. They are not heavy and I prefer it over the new nylon models. The day you asked about them there was one one ebay that went for cheap. I have seen most of the multi drawer boxes go for more that the new ones.

I've got a 4 tray, Joe Humphries Richardson box and it's really not heavy, or cumbersome at all. The plastic, Downstream brand has some advantages (adding/removing trays easily comes to mind) but the craftmanship on the aluminum Richardson brand is first rate and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Figure some day I'll be able to hand it down to my grandkids.

The only place I've ever seen those is in the Catskills and the guides swear by them.

My son has a Richardson Flybox, and I use the plastic Downstream Flybox. They are both light and great systems for carrying flies.
