Could a SHWAPF be tied using black thread, black/grey squirrel tail, and black thread to imitate a small, emerging, black caddis?
If so, would you use a wet fly hook, or a curved caddis hook?
As always, adivce is appreciated.

yes, yes, and yes. this is the ultimate utility fly. i'd use the straight shank myself but if you used the curved hook it wouldn't be a major problem. i've had bites on black shwapfs.

boy, I've seen those blacks as small as #24.
for those I use black thread and just a wisp of cdc wing. simple solution to a tricksy problem.
but yeah I guess that fly whose name I can't spell or say would work, though I'm not sure it's the best answer.

The beauty of Al's fly is you can change whatever to match whatever. It works on every kind of fish you can name - including saltwater. Go for it!

SHWAPF (pronounced Shhhh...Wop...fffff, or you could say Shhhh...Whap...ffff))is a chameleon. You can make it anything that you want....except a Wooly Bugger!

Shwapf = (Swept Hackle, Wingless, All-Purpose Fly). If you know that it is easy to spell .
For God's sake, Don't Quote me! I'm Probably making this crap up!
I had the same question in the tying board. I tied 9 and they were all different. I used what I had. Pheasant tail and varying colors of dubbing. I even tied some mylar thread on the underbelly. I used dark colors - light colors - multi colors.
Set your mind free and the tying will follow.
