Thread: Light Tippets & Light Rods

Default Light Tippets & Light Rods

Tie a fresh 5 or 6 x tippet to your 5 or 6 weight rod, tie one end to something, then raise your rod to the normal "fish fighting" position and see how much pressure it takes to break the tippet with a slow even application of increasing pressure.

Its fun and hopefully to save many fish this year, (from needless overplaying?)

    Ah, .... Ok,

Incidentally, I'll usually play a fish as HARD as possible, ... If I break off, well, that's life.

This is me pulling on a 9wt XP and a 6-8lb tippet with an 16-18 lb salmon hanging on to the other end:

    #23 pool June 2002 - didn't break off either

    JC,

Anatomy of a battle. (the photos are not all from the same day, but all reflect the story well)

I connected to her on a down stream swing from about 40 ft upstream of that position.

10 seconds after the connection, I had to scamble over the rocks in the brook to get below the gallery (I love caulked wading boots!!)

I let her run the whole length of the pool as she was a fresh from the sea hen and NOTHING can stop that on the first run:
A look DOWN the #23 pool to the rapids

She stopped herself just before the rapids, I let up pressure and she came back BY HERSELF and buried her nose under a log on the far side.

I threw a rock to get her out and muscled her in to the position you see in the first pic in the thread.

    Quick click and release:

    JC,

I know, I rant all the time about being a purist and fishing dries 90% of the time.

Truth is, I used to (yuck) down stream MOST of the time for Salmon. My goal in life (well, ... for 2005 as it didn't pan out in 2004) is to step up, spot a Salman, move DOWNSTREAM and upstream dry a nice /6 Royal Wulff and connect to THAT FISH.

I don't have as much success as say, Ann, but I do have a heck of a lot of fun getting skunked. (any day on the water is a better day than one at the office).

    JC,

LOL, ... It is just howl'n outside right now, snow is coming down horizontally and I'm dreaming of getting back to the river.
