    Default Goodbye Puget Sound

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington's inland marine waters officially have a new name -- the Salish Sea.

U.S. Board on Geographic Names Executive Secretary Lou Yost says the board approved the name Thursday. That means Salish Sea can now be added to maps and other materials. Washington state's Board of Geographic Names approved the name late last month.

The Salish Sea includes Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Georgia Strait and the connected waters. That area often is referred to as Puget Sound, but technically that name only refers to the waters south of Whidbey Island.

Canadian officials also have proposed using Salish Sea for much of the marine waters between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

I think I will still call it the Puget Sound and not worry about the Salish Sea.

Sailing, sailing, over the Salish Sea...

Sounds like a great place for the pirates to roam.

    Kerry, it's still a guamish?

Well, the Salish were there before us white people, canoeing around and doing all those things the natives did.

When the white guys arrived in the Skagit Valley they asked the Skagits where to build. They were told on ground above the high water mark on the trees. So what did the white guys do? They cut down the trees and built their houses in the flood plain. We have been complaining about flooding ever since.

Why change the name now? It is to late.

    Lemme guess here.

The designation of a "sea" gives it some designation that makes for more 'environmental' regulations.

The Salish Sea, Puget Sound, what ever you want to call it, could use some more environmental regulations. It is one of the most polluted bodies of water on the west coast if not the most.
