Lightbulb Not FF - Assembly instructions

Not a rant, ... just a weird observation.

I'm getting ready for winter so I got a nice 6000 watt backup generator for the house. Set it up this morning. On the BIG billboard style "Start Here!!" sheet, steps 1-5 are for installing the wheels and handle.

It says "Do not put in oil before doing these first 5 steps". That's obvious 'cause you need to turn the generator on its side to easily attach the wheels etc.

When you get to step 6 it says clearly "Do steps 1-5 before adding oil"

Then at step 6, it says "The crank case has been filled with oil at the factory, simply check the oil level".

I knew there was oil in the crank case already, so I had attached the wheel assembly on a lift

Just a 'lil note in case any of you go to setup a generator this fall.

    Default Oil

That must have been a test. They usually start those things off by saying "Read the all the instructions first". Naturally we never do so those who didn't think of it would end up with oil on the ground or floor. That means they failed the test.

Thanks for the advice and heads up. I have one to assemble. A 6000w also. Haven't put the wheels on yet. So.....thanks for the explanation.

I will have to watch out for it.

One word of caution when using a generator:

When you hook a backup generator to your house when your power is out......
......PLEASE turn OFF your *main* breaker in your electric panel.

This will prevent power being sent out to the power lines. If the power is out, the linemen could be hurt by the power coming back through the system onto a power line they are working on.

Basically what happens is that the power back feeds from your house to the transformer that is connected to the power line. The transformer works both ways....it takes high voltage from the power line and turns it into 120 volts for your house. If your house sends 120 volts to the transformer, it will put high voltage out on the line.

    my 2 cents.

    Thumbs up

    Brian,

    Absolutely right!

The master electrician is coming in this week to complete the installation of the transfer switch and the 30 amp box which will run our key circuits.

For any who want to run a backup-up generator on their house circuit, ... YOU MUST use a transfer switch (I believe it's in the codes in the US). There are a few haywire schemes on the internet to run the backup up current back through a plug in the house.

You can seriously damage your house, generator etc this way ... AND you will quite probably injure or kill a line technician when you back feed into the grid.

The investment in a backup generator is pretty big. The added cost of a properly installed switch is minimal compared to that!
(oh, ... and you should use fuel conditioner .. as small investment for peace of mind, smoother running of motors and less maintenance).
