Bonefish tips
Here are some tips for first timers.

1. Calibrate your guide each time you have a new one. Make several casts and ask him how far each one is. What you may think is 50 feet he will call as 30. Try to determine if he is measuring from your feet or your rod tip.

2. Most important!! Bone fish don?t strike like trout do. You will seldom ever feel a bonefish take your fly. They most often will just suck it in and you will feel nothing.. There is no current and the fish will not be returning to a feeding station as do trout so the fish will not move after he has taken the fly until he feels the hook.

3. Keep your rod tip down pointing at the water as you retrieve to avoid excess slack in the line. Don?t try to set the hook by lifting your rod. (This is one of the most common mistakes that trout fishermen make.) If the fish doesn?t have the fly all you?ll do is pull the fly away from the fish and most likely spook him. The best technique is to do a quick strip with the line in your non-casting hand - then if you feel the fish lift your rod and clear the line so you can get the fish on the reel as quickly as possible. You can apply much more pressure on the fish if you hold the rod low to one side in the opposite direction that the fish is moving.

4. Listen to your guide on making your strip, generally he can see the fish better than you can. If you do a steady strip bonefish will often just continue to follow the fly until they spook from the boat. You need to stop and let the fish take the fly. If you can?t see your fly you can often note a take because the fish will tip head down and tail up as he sucks in the fly the fly.

5. Practice your casting before the trip. If the wind is blowing outside - go practice! Practice with the wind coming from all quarters. Practice making your cast with only one backcast, two maximum. Master the double haul if you are not proficient at it. Hold the fly in your left hand with approximately 20 feet of line out side the rod tip and practice until you can make a 50 foot cast with only one backcast. Speed and line management are the name of the game.

6. Always wear plenty of good sun lotion; why ruin a great trip trying to get a little tan to show off at home. Sun on the flats can be dangerous.

7. Invest in the best polarized sunglasses you can afford and combine them with a good hat with a wide brim or long bill. These items will add immeasurably it spotting fish on the flats.
