I love topwater action and my favorite pattern is the Gartside Gurgler. I can fish it on the surface or just below. I have tied in on hooks ranging from 14 to 5/0.

But more often than not, topwater presentations are not optimal for the conditions so you will find a clouser minnow in my tippet more than any other pattern. I have tied them on hooks from 12 to 6/0.

BWO's. From 18-24. Duns, emergers, cripples, nymphs, and spinners!

Here are samples I've recently tied....

Sight fishing with streamers to large ill tempered fish, doesn't matter if it's in sweet water or brine.

I have no favorite streamer pattern.

For smallmouth, it would be some variation of the Clouser Minnow.

For trout, I like fishing a pheasant tail soft hackle. However, on my last two trips, a GRHE with a Zebra midge dropper was the ticket.

Favorite fly: the one in the fish's lip.

Favorite technique: The one that got the fly in the fish's lip.

Actually, I lean pretty heavy towards the soft hackles.
If it swims and eats, it'll eat a fly.

My favorite style would have to be dry. But I have to say that's probably because I've had more success with it. Dry fly fishing is more active to me; I can see the fly, I can see when the fish rises. It's easier for me to get into the 'zone' with it. Maybe I have some kind of attention disorder. I'm not saying that it's better than other styles, I'm just saying that it's the one that fits my temperament. It gets me the most excited. But if it's just not happening, or I see no rises when I first get to the stream, then it's time to practice my nymphing. When I've reached the edges of my patience with that I start to think about swinging a wet fly, or using a streamer, and then it just gets weird after that. But when they start to rise...

Speculating fly is usually a rusty spinner, but otherwise I try to match the hatch, or get close. For nymphs either pheasant tail or a hare's ear.
