After about 20 years finally sent the jaws back to Regal because the original traditional jaws used to be advertised to hold from # 6/0 to # 32's. Now they're # 1/0 to # 22. Still have #24's, #26's & #28's which sat in the jaws without any problems. About 2 years ago chipped the jaw tips on a #32 hook, which disappeared into thin air & chipped the inside hook groove on a #1/0 bendback, but kept tying. Never really had any other flying hooks all those years & in the mean time purchsed a Revolution, which seemed like the natural progression in vise selection. Waiting for the big game jaw upgrade to see how great the next 20 years of tying are going to be ! As for the brass knob tension : once it was tightened down it stayed put . Probably would have to actually grab the jaws & the shaft to get them to turn, as there's been many times tying deer hair flies that the brass had to be loosened so as to trim the hair body to proportion on the underneath & sides.
After about 3 weeks, Regal only works Mon - Thurs & the vise inspectors shop take Wednesdays off; got new the Medallion jaws to replace the original ones from 20 years ago for the $40 fee. Thought about an upgrade to the stainless steel midge jaws, but that would have cost more than what I originally purchased the whole vise for & don't think they'll be that many #24's - #32's tyed anymore. Also got an upgrade to the Big Game jaws for the Revolution or a few $$ more. 3 hook grooves & a sloped head going into the tips leaving ample room for tying & plenty of jaw on the hook bend. Only a couple of #10's tyed so far as I have to make some time to tie saltwater patterns & get used to the new rotary functions. In hindsight I should have purchased the Big Game jaw upgrade for the Medallion as the jaws are fantastic !
Terry, the vise jaws should be raised to a near vertical position to tie the smaller hooks. This position will allow you to place more of the hook into the jaws without having to get so close to the tips. There should be an illustration pic in your instructions.
