Relaxed and now a Full Time Trout Bum, Est. 2024
If I turn left it's about 1 hour to Sandy Hook For the salt water & if I turn right it's also about an hour to the Muski For trout ,with some lakes & ponds in between that I never seem to have time to fish, My favorite is GLS in Maine & that about 640 mi but I do manage at least 3 trips a year up there, one 2 weeker in the spring for landlocks, a one week trip in July or Aug for smallmouth, & another 1 or 2 weeks in Oct. for landlocks again.
I live in LA = Lethbridge Alberta, 40 mins to 8 hours away from Some of the greatest Trout water in North America.. local lakes in the city 5 - 15 mins ...
As in the Army, I have never had a bad day Fly fishing, some damn uncomfortable days but never a bad one!
Everyone must believe in something and I believe in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying and believe I will

I get to the Au Sable in about 14 hours, driving the speed limit. I'm surprised to hear that your trek is so much longer. Do you go thru/around Chicago?

P.S. Most of my local fave's I can get to in 2 hours of less, depending on traffic.
P.P.S. Fortunately I can get to some great memories right behind my eyelids...

Favorites:
east slope Shenandoah NP 1:45, then hike in.
Shenandoah Valley limestone spring creeks 2 hours.
Oregon, all day in a plane.
Yellowstone NP, all day in a plane plus a few hours driving.
New Zealand - a long, long day in a plane. Well worth it.
I probably do 90% or more of my fishing at these three favorite places:
local bluegill pond at a city park - 20 minutes
(summer) Oak Creek for rainbows and browns - 2.5 hours
(winter) Lower Salt River for rainbows - 1 hour
Then at least once a year to my all time favorite place:
great uncle-in-law's pond - all day on a plane to Goodfield, IL via PIA, then 10 minutes from grandparents-in-law's house to the pond

Caney Fork: 3 hours
Arkansas rivers: 4-5 hours
Good fishing technique trumps all.....wish I had it.
Colorado River, (the other one in Texas) to S. Fork CO. =973 miles and worth every damn minute of it.
Once in CO. I camp for 4 months 75 feet from my favorite stream.
Winter in tx. and it's 100 feet to the river.
No man can have too many fly rods;
no woman too many shoes.
Bluegill/largemouth ponds - 20 minutes
Smallmouth river - depending on which river 15 minutes to an hour.
Trout - 3 - 4 hours ( I have been making quite a few trips lately)
