    Default The Guard Poodle

I had mentioned the Guard Poodle in a couple of posts. While brushing said guard poodle last night, I was inspired to come up with a fly to honor her services to the birds in the neighborhood in defending their feeder from the legions of squirrels in the neighborhood.

    The recipe is:

Dry fly hook, #10 to however small you want to try.
    Tail: Gray Squirrel tail
Wing: Gray Squirrel Tail, tied upright and divided.
Body: Poodle hair. White in this case, but any color other than black that you have handy should work fine.
    Hackle: Black dry fly hackle

This is the honoree, Mimi, Guard Poodle Supreme!

I knew poodles had to be good for something. Now we know......

My dog flies have to be black, because I have 2 Labs and one Black & Tan German Dachshund (the big one). The Lab flies float really good.... but everytime I cast them out, they keep trying to bring ducks back in......

I tied this one on a #10 hook but want to tie one on a #14 or so and try it. I was tying just for kicks and giggles, but it looks like it might actually catch something. But what do I know. Took me two years to catch a fish on a fly.

I have two white bulldogs with brindle patches.

I keep eyeing the brindle for nymphs but that part never sheds. The white, which comes out easily, is unusable.

Oh, come on Steven! Surely, with as good as it looks, you could "help" it just a little!!

We are coming up with some nice dog flies! This could make an interesting swap!

Great looking fly Kevin. Looks like it would make a good flying ant. But I like the name Guard Poodle better.
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.

There was simply no other name it could be called. She works so hard at keeping the evil squirrels out of the bird feeder. She never chases a bird or any of the rabbits that come in the yard, just the squirrels. That was why the squirrel hair had to be part of it.
