Thread: Fly Fishing Merit Badge

    Default Fly Fishing Merit Badge

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience teaching the Fly Fishing Merit Badge. Though I did eventually earn my Eagle Scout, one of my regrets in scouting was that I never got a chance to earn the badge. I was hoping this summer to work with my former troop (Troop 652, Brecksville, OH), and I was hoping that someone on this board had experience with it and could give some pointers.

buckeye... we're about to get a program started here in Arkansas. I have an e-mail out requesting what the scout leader needs from us. As soon as I hear, I'll let you know.

I've been doing the FFMB for several years now with our Troop. Somewhere I downloaded a sheet that really helped. Send me your address and I'll share with you or if I find the web site again I'll send that. Try checking meritbadge.com for some helpful forms and instruction material. If you need more help e mail me. Glad to help.

I would but it the difficulty and clearing all the hurdles, to me is not worth it. Security checks to see if I ever was a Child Molester or have any Criminal Background, or and many more hurdles after that. I don't know if it is just me living in Minnesota, or it is nationwide. But for me, I would like to, but the negitives (even petty misdomenors count against you)just put me off from, trying.

I do a fly tying demonstration (not a class) at a local library. I sit in the empty reading room on Saturdays, tying flies. If anyone comes in and inquires, I point them to a chair at a vise, and hand them Al Campbells Series, that I printed out. And have them tie a fly. If I was giving a class, I would have to get clearance through the Minnesota Bureau of Investigation for clearance to hold classes.

I guess that's where you and I are different Steven. Not trying to start anything with anyone so please don't take it that way. I was fortunate enough to work with some teens in a local high school. In my opinion, if what I do, however small it may seem keeps one youth out of trouble, it's worth whatever misery I have to go through to set the classes up. When I have a youth come to me and say how amazed he/she is because I drive 3 hours to help them and his/her parent won't drive 5 minutes makes me feel what I do is well worth it. I only wish I had this opportunity when I was younger. Or even when my son was younger. He spent some time on the wrong side of the law. Maybe I feel like doing this is making up for what I didn't do for him. I don't know. But it feels good to help out.

I think I fall into the middle of road on this. I turned 18 while still in high school, and in the eye of the BSA was classified as an adult. Because I wanted to remain active I went through the mandatory training to be allowed to be an adult leader. Actually, because the troop is sponsored by a Catholic church, I had to do both the BSA and Diocese of Cleveland mandated training. Looking back at it now, if I didn't already have the training done I'm not sure that I would. However, I think it is important to screen adults who volunteer. When I first entered scouting I was with a different troop. One day on the front page of the paper we saw one of our Assistant Scoutmasters being lead out of his house in handcuffs. He was accused, and later convicted of a number of crimes, including child pornography. He had fabricated his whole history and had fooled everyone. I guess this is why I'm willing to deal with the inconveniences. In my opinion, an individual, like Steven H. McGarthwaite, who has a military service record should be granted some sort of exemption. I've personally experienced a military background check, and I can attest that it?s far more in depth than the checks done by any organization. But that's just my two cents.

    Howdy buckeyetier,
I have and will contune to be a Merit Badge Councilor for the Boy Scouts.
I was one of the frist to test and pass a Scout for the Fly Fishing Merit Badge.
On the USscout site is some good information on what to test for and the answers to look for.
There are 10 sections on the Blue Card that are to be signed off. Some the Scout master can sign like the knots, safety, and Waterway care. Sorry I am at work and do not have the address and blue card sign off with me.
I will tomorrow at about noon fill in the blanks if you can not find it.
I support the care that is taken on making sure that the right people are caring and leading our youth.

Seven H I'm surprised that you of all people would feel that way about helping scouts. The paper work is easy and if one has nothing to hide---- I have also been a counslor for years and have 150 plus FFishing maerit badge scouts to my personal record so far. Not all have compleated the testing. Teaching of course these days isn't one on one for their protection and mine. All I have in it is time - as a club sponsored educator tools and materials are free.
For merit badge requirments the troop will furnish the merit badge book or you can pick one up at the you local scout office.
JC the requirements have been out for two years------
