I mentioned this fly in a couple of my posts under the Fishing Reports section of "Dad and the Kid". Some have expressed an interest so I got with Buzz and would like to present the fly here for any who would like to give it a whirl. This is very simple to tie and effective in a lot of situations. Buzz originally tied this for midge hatches, but we have since found that it works equally as well during most mayfly hatches

Here is the pic of Buzz's original tie as tied by Buzz:

Buzz has tied this fly in a variety of sizes, but the one that sems to be most effective is in a size #16 for most applications

Hook: Mustad 94845, size #16
Tail: White poly tuft
Abdomen: black spectrum dubbing
Rib: Small size Uni silver wire
Thorax: Peacock herl
Head: 2mm foam strip folded and tied in (1/8th inch strip for size #16 hook)

I am never one to try to improve on perfection, but I have come up with a variation that I use when I tie this fly and it seems to do quite well. It is as follows:

I use a chartreuse rib in the same size Uni wire and add a wrap of starling between the herl and the foam head.

Here's my version of Buzz's original using a chartreuse rib instead of silver.

My changes have seen some great results, but the original is still one of the best flies I've ever used during hatch periods.

Give it a try.

Tight Lines,

Kelly.
