Motorizing the Rich Lewis Line Winder

I used a cork in the axle portion of the holder having drilled a hole in the cork to accept the shaft from a BBQ motor...[you can make it any length you want]. I will probably insert something stronger as time goes on. Incidently it was a wine bottle cork...

Then I drilled two holes in the housing to accept the prongs of the BBQ squewer. Actually of the fit of the squared shaft is secure you may not have to do this....but it's easy.

Chuck the shaft in a power drill and you're good to go.

You'll probably want to set up some sort of a stablized setup.

I just like to do things fast so I like the drill idea....used it on another setup I devised for a winder.... and also think of this...

You could attach a BBQ motor instead of the drill and use it to dry epoxy flies that you stick into the foam....[or I think some power drills can be speed adjusted and locked on]

I like that design for removing the flyline (ingenious!). When you are spooling the line back on the reel, though, how do you maintain tension with this device? Seems like it would spin freely unless you kept one hand on the handle, which would be awkward.

I haven't used this device yet but it seems to have plenty of resistance so I don't think it will be a problem and you could add resistance by adjusting the foam. I am planning on anchoring the stand somehow....sandbags [like for target shooting] or clamps.....something will work...

I have used another setup I concocted using a rotisserie BBQ basket and actually spooled back on the reel using that winder thing you see advertised and a power drill and over spin was not a problem...I was doing a lot of lines and reels since I was replacing all mine after a robbery....so I was into speed...by the way if you have a fast easy setup like this it's a piece of cake to take it all off and get exactly the right amount of backing on your reel.

Good question Gator!

Looking at it, I would think that adding a 'drag' to the frame would not be too tough. Some cork/foam and screws utilising the top hold in the handle frame is what I envision. . .

Just a note if using the hand cranked version of this winder: To spool the line back onto your reel, just thread the line though the butt section guides on your rod with the reel in the reelseta and wind it with the line squeezed between your thumb and fingers like usual-guiding it from side to side. The winder will have enough resistance as-built to not "overspool". No big deal. It works fine as designed and you can strip lines and backings from reels even faster now if you motorize it like ducksterman has done...
